Nevay, John

(1792-1870)

   Scottish poet born in Forfar, Angus, he earned his living as a handloom weaver. He contributed prose tales to the Edinburgh Literary Journal and to other periodicals. Many of his poems reflect his love of the slopes and valleys of the neighboring Grampians the hills and countryside around. His works are described as spontaneous and tender. His published works are: A Pamphlet of Rhymes, 1818. A Second Pamphlet, 1821. Emmanuel, 1831, a sacred poem in nine cantos. Mary of Avonbourne, 1833. The Peasant, 1834. The Yeldron, 1835 (the yellowhammer bird). The Child of Nature and Other Poems, 1835. Rosaline's Dream, 1853. The Fountain of the Rock, 1855.
